Abstract: Along with the rapid development of ecological momentary assessment and biomarker testing, the past decade has witnessed a significant rise in the use of intensive longitudinal design in social and behavioral sciences. Such design automatically generates a set of time-dependent and interrelated psychological/physiological processes, namely a dynamical system. Dr. Hu will briefly introduce the ideas, techniques and applications of dynamical systems analysis. The techniques involved include Differential Equation Modeling, State-Space Modeling, Behavioral Genetics and Network Analysis. Illustrative examples include the coupling of binge eating with estrogen change across menstrual cycle, the effect of aging on the bi-directional relationship between sleep and habitual caffeine intake, genetic and environmental influences on mood change among adolescents from families with different socioeconomic status, and the impact of mindfulness-based intervention on the cross-lagged network between symptoms.
